I have performed and taught few works as many times as this beloved music by Annea Lockwood. I have known it for so long that I have no recollection about how it came to my hands. But I don’t forget the first time I worked on it; it was with Naiara Ijurko, who played a fabulous version from memory that encouraged me to memorize it as well.

Each section of the work is a small sound oasis created with varied objects: stones that talk to each other found on a remote Greek beach, bubble wrap that colors all the lower sounds, a slow motion gamelan, the well-known sound of superball mallets that reminds us the song of the whales… all treated with unmatched tenderness and care.

Her type of writing, which I will talk about later in another video, has always seemed to me an example to define the most correct, genuine and sincere way in which a musical idea can be expressed on paper.

The work presents materials distributed within the piano to be explored with freedom. The composer closes the overall form, but allows for a great deal of exploration and creativity, resulting in a relaxed and enjoyable experience. The title of the piece refers to the ear of the pianist (Lois Svard to whom the work is dedicated and who performs it wonderfully) as a guide to the sound discourse. In her own words: “I think of this experience as “ear-walking”, like a hiker exploring a landscape.”

It is not a work for all pianists, nor for all listeners. It’s a very meditative music that develops very slowly over time. If you don’t have quality time to spend with it and good headphones, it’s not worth it. But for many listeners, it will be a delightful and suggestive experience that will be like few things they have heard before.

Pocas obras he interpretado y enseñado tantas veces como esta queridísima música de Annea Lockwood. Hace tanto tiempo que la conozco que ya no recuerdo las circunstancias por las que cayó en mis manos. Pero no se me olvida la primera vez que la trabajé; fue con Naiara Ijurko, quien hizo una fabulosa versión de memoria que me animó a mí a memorizarla también.

Cada sección de la obra es un pequeño oasis sonoro creado con variados objetos: piedras encontradas en una remota playa griega que conversan entre ellas, papel de burbujas que colorea todos los sonidos graves, una gamelán a cámara lenta, el conocido sonido de las baquetas de superball que nos recuerda el canto de las ballenas…todo tratado con una ternura y un cuidado inigualables.

Su tipo de escritura, de la que hablaré más adelante en otro vídeo, me ha parecido siempre un ejemplo para definir la manera más acertada, genuina y sincera en la que se puede plasmar en el papel una idea musical.

La obra presenta materiales distribuidos dentro del piano para ser explorados con libertad. La compositora cierra la forma, pero permite una gran dosis de exploración y creatividad, dando como resultado una experiencia interpretativa relajada y placentera. El título de la pieza hace referencia al oído del pianista (de la pianista Lois Svard a quien la obra está dedicada y que la interpreta de manera maravillosa) como guía del discurso sonoro. En sus propias palabras: “Pienso esta experiencia como caminar con el oído; como un caminante explorando un paisaje.”

No es una obra para todos los pianistas, ni para todos los públicos. Es una música muy meditativa que se desarrolla muy lentamente en el tiempo. Si no tienes un tiempo de calidad que dedicarle y unos buenos auriculares, no merece la pena. Ahora, para muchos oyentes, será una experiencia deliciosa y sugerente que se parecerá a pocas cosas que hayan escuchado antes.
