The project Anhedonia, is a reappropriation of the telenovela Avenida Brasil, in which dialogues have been entirely censored. The outcome of this gesture stresses on the non-verbal interactions between the actors resulting in overemphasised faces’ expressions and a tense yet emptied out narrative. Such dramatic scenario outlines the strategies that are used to produce suspense and seduction amid televisual audiences. Since the first episodes on radio in the 30’s, soap operas became a major part of socio-cultural influence around the world. The popularisation of this melodramatic style in Brasil was largely made possible because of the massive production by Globo Rede, the main media corporation. On Globo’s channels there is about 2’500 hours per year of telenovelas, for a 1’800 hours per year of TV news broadcast. Globo’s group controversial semi-monopole covers more than 98 % of national territory, about 99 % of the Brazilian population.
The term anhedonia comes from the Greek: ἀν- an-, "without" and ἡδονή - hēdonē, "pleasure”. It is a loss of the capacity to experiencing pleasure from activities usually found enjoyable, e.g. exercise, hobbies, music, sexual activities or social interactions. While earlier definitions of anhedonia emphasised pleasurable experience, more recent models have highlighted the need to consider different aspects of enjoyable behaviour, such as motivation or desire to engage in activities (motivational anhedonia), as compared to the level of enjoyment of the activity itself (consummatory anhedonia).
