What is a performance without sound and music? Greg Raether, the Andria Theatre’s Sound Designer, tells us about how he came to do sound for the theatre and why he continues to come back show after show.

GREG RAETHER: “I have a background in music. I went to college for music, which included all the music theory and the literature and performance, but also the electronic side of music, meaning mixing and recording, things like that. And that's how I got started actually doing sound. I've only done sound here at the Andrea and I got started about three years ago. What happened is my daughter was doing student shows here over the summer and my daughter came home and said, they're looking for someone to run sound. You should do it. So I said, well, I'll think about it. Well, a few days later, she comes back and says. I told him, you'd run sound. So. And I've been doing it ever since. So to run sound for a full show, it includes. Sound design , which are the sound cues, as well as any music that needs to be done. I'll either find music or I'll make it myself and put that in the show as well as all the sound clips, either record them or edit them to fit. Part of that sound design is also getting the microphones on the actor and actresses, the mic placement and how they sound and setting all their levels. So it's all those things. Pretty much anything the audience hears coming through our sound system, I'm in charge of. The most satisfying thing for me, is working with the cast as well as putting together a good quality sounding show. I love working with people and meeting them and it's a lot of fun. And I take a lot of pride in trying to make them sound as good as they can. They've put a lot of work into these shows and a lot of dedication. It's a big commitment. I really liked to have them sound good. I like to have the other sound cues and music really compliment what they're doing and the work they've put into it. That is very, very satisfying for me.”

The Andria Theatre is a live theatre and performing arts center located in West Central Minnesota—home to the Alexandria Area Arts Association which is a non-profit organization.
