adtextum documents the process of the set up and weaving a fabric using conductive yarns on an 1850 Jacquard loom. The conductive yarns are used in order to explore new types of materiality, a meditation on rhythm and repetition and using the conductive woven grid as a form sculpted text, albeit one whose meaning is delayed and overlaps with the repetitive movement of the loom. Here, text as practice, following Barthe’s From Work to Text, arrives as a network of intertextuality, while the work follows the physical and embodied process of an algorithmic set-up. adtextum is an exploration of the intersecting loops of translatability and decipherability, the trace of the encounter left on a material surface that defies classification, and the gathering of text as “play, activity, production, practice,” in both digital and non-digital algorithmic systems and the intersection of the two.[1] [1] Roland Barthes and Stephen Heath, Image, Music, Text (London: Fontana Press, 1987).
