Through our dancing and creative writing, we found that we have strong feelings about the fantasies placed upon the brown, Salsa dancing body due to its confrontation with the white gaze. It’s impossible to separate these, so we re-identify ourselves with our own brown bodies and their tools for expression. It feels important to maintain the mystery, the shadow that this brown body lives in because of the lack of visibility of migrant bodies in the Global North or the implicit danger of that visibility. As we seek to articulate our practice of Salsa through our own gaze, we turn to you, the viewer, and ask, what for you is your gaze? What for you is the Salsa Dancing Body?
