This week’s organ recital is tapestry of French cathedral music. It opens with a piece not by a French composer but a local one: Stefan Olesten. The piece, commissioned by the San Diego Chapter of the AGO, is called "In a French Cathedra,l" so sets the mood. The recital continues with a Grand Jeu by Pierre DuMage, from the French baroque. Then a short piece—Les enfants de Dieu— from La Nativité du Seigneur by a giant of 20th-century for organ, Olivier Messiaen. The program concludes with two of the Esquisses Byzantines by Henri Mulet: Rosace (Rose Window) a colorful and tranquil sketch inspired by the great rose windows in many French Cathedrals, and in our own!), and Tu es Petra (Thou art the Rock, and upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell whall not prevail against thee), a brilliant toccata which illuminates the battle between good and evil.
