I recorded this track as a play-along practice piece, purely for critique by my fellow members on scottsbasslessons.com It is not intended for publication, or wider circulation. It is not for profit.

I chose to play along with Alison Moyet’s live recording of “Only You”, which is a track from her (2015) re-released Album, “Voice” (Deluxe Edition).

I particularly like this stripped back version, which features Alison Moyet’s superb voice, accompanied by a Piano and String section which are added later in the performance. I feel that adding a Bass line of my own creation demanded tight timing and empathy with the vocal and arrangement. I hope I’ve managed to do it the good service it undoubtedly deserves.

The song was composed by English Musician, Vince Clarke. He wrote it while in the English Group, “Depeche Mode”, but first recorded it in 1982, after forming the Duo, “Yazoo”, with Alison Moyet. It became an instant success in the UK Charts, peaking at #2.

I chose to play along on my (2004) Overwater “Evolution” 5 string fretted Bass. I have recently fitted it with Thomastik-Infeld #JF345 Flat Wound Nickel Strings.

This was again a one shot take. I am pleased with the tone and quality of the sound. That was what I wanted to achieve.

This particular Bass is ‘Active’ only mode via an onboard preamp. I set the onboard Tone Control at 50%. Bass, Mid-range and Treble were also set at 50%. No other additional effects were employed, only my fingers.

I routed it via my Bergantino B|AMP, which I used as an inline preamp, direct through an XLR cable, to my recently updated Focusrite Clarett 4 Pre USB Audio Interface, which is connected to my Intel i7 powered, Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 64 bit PC. The Audio track was recorded direct on Ableton Live 10 Lite recording software.

The Video was contemporaneously captured, via my ancient Panasonic Video Camera, which was connected direct to my PC via a Firewire cable. It was recorded direct to Corel Pinnacle Studio Video Software, version 21.5. The Audio track was subsequently added and synchronised with the video footage.
