Taking the form of a video correspondence between May and June 2020, Where From Here documents thoughts and questions about the paradoxical nature of freedom in times of quarantine and virtual isolation. Filmed between Hudson, New York and the Helsinki archipelago, Where From Here takes you on an immersive and reflective journey, with performances and readings taking place in gardens, rail yards, cemeteries and landfills.

American artist Lenore Malen and Finnish artist Samir Bhowmik have written and directed their respective scenes as alternating messages that comment on each other’s missives, moving between the themes of the physical and the virtual, negotiating both presence and absence, in search of new meanings of freedom.

The film features actress and performer Jessica Weinstein in New York and singer and performer Dallas Ulla in Helsinki.

The film was commissioned by the Finnish Institutes’ Together Alone project to quickly respond to the challenges caused by the COVID-19 epidemic calling for new art projects and reflecting on the global crisis. The Institutes sought artistic proposals related to the state of emergency, radical change, resilience and artistic practice in the future.

He uses multi-sensorial methods, investigating infrastructure, in order to produce poetic vignettes highlighting the opposition of multiple materialities, networks and bodies. He often creates participatory narratives and immersive performances where imaginaries of hidden, contested and lost topographies unfold.
