Taking the form of a video correspondence between May and June 2020, Where From Here documents thoughts and questions about the paradoxical nature of freedom in times of quarantine and virtual isolation. Filmed between Hudson, New York and the Helsinki archipelago, Where From Here takes you on an immersive and reflective journey, with performances and readings taking place in gardens, rail yards, cemeteries and landfills.

American artist Lenore Malen and Finnish artist Samir Bhowmik have written and directed their respective scenes as alternating messages that comment on each other’s missives, moving between the themes of the physical and the virtual, negotiating both presence and absence, in search of new meanings of freedom.

The film features actress and performer Jessica Weinstein in New York and singer and performer Dallas Ulla in Helsinki.

The film was commissioned by the Finnish Institutes’ Together Alone project to quickly respond to the challenges caused by the COVID-19 epidemic calling for new art projects and reflecting on the global crisis. The Institutes sought artistic proposals related to the state of emergency, radical change, resilience and artistic practice in the future.

Lenore Malen is a New York based interdisciplinary artist. With a BA degree in Art History from Skidmore College and a MA in Art history from the University of Pennsylvania, she works with diverse media, incorporating in her projects performance, photography, video, installation but also fiction writing. Using history and humor, Malen explores utopian longings, dystopian aftermaths as well as the sciences and technologies that give essence to them. More recently, her work focuses on ecology, cultural myths and on the unstable boundaries between humans and animals. Malen was awarded a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship and NYFA/NYSCA grants in Interdisciplinary Art. Her creations have been exhibited and performed in the USA but also internationally.

Samir Bhowmik (born 1975) is a multidisciplinary Finnish artist and architect. Bhowmik graduated from Aalto University, Finland, as a Doctor of Arts and also holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Maryland, United-States. His current work explores the architectural, infrastructural and energetic entanglements between cultural memory and the environment. He uses multi-sensorial methods, investigating infrastructure, in order to produce poetic vignettes highlighting the opposition of multiple materialities, networks and bodies. He often creates participatory narratives and immersive performances where imaginaries of hidden, contested and lost topographies unfold.
