The world is changing. If the global pandemic teaches us anything, it’s the importance of adaptability. At Adventures on the Gorge, we’re taking that lesson to heart. When it becomes safe enough for us to resume whitewater rafting, we’ll be ready with a slate of trips that can help people feel comfortable with their decisions to go adventuring. We calling this trip—The Gauley Loop—a new trip, but in reality, it’s a return to a concept from days gone by. Our CEO, Roger Wilson, explains what it is and why we’re offering it.

“Years ago, Class-VI used to run, ‘the Loop.’ I’ll just say it’s shaped like a thumb. Where we’re putting in at Backender, we put in there and we run the thumb. And then when we get down to here, that’s where we take out. So, it’s a short distance between the two, so we can shuttle people back and re-run it.

There’s no bad level. If it’s big water in the spring or a big rain in the summer, the rapids are awesome. Now if it’s dry, and you’re in duckies—the classification should be class-III-FUN. It’s the closest thing we’ll ever have to an amusement park ride.

We also have a pavilion at Canyon Doors, which is our main camping pavilion during Gauley Season. Then we also have another one upstream at Backender. They’re identical. They’re designed for 60-80 people, but to keep these trips small and separated, we’re going to maximize the trip at 24.

Our efforts are to lower the risk as much as we humanly, possibly can. What would a reasonable person say: ‘Yeah, I feel good about bringing my family?’ That’s the guideline that I’m holding to. I want to use everything we can—watching the CDC, watching the World Health Organization, but also using some good practical common sense—or good sense I should say.”
