"Pandemic Effects from the Prison of My Mind" is a long title for a short video performance and poetic throw-down. This is the opening movement from my latest NPN Creation Fund solo titled "UNITED STATES OF AMNESIA: Dare to Remember". I am trying to rise from the Covid ashes that have caused me epic financial losses and emotional breakdowns. In my "Blue Brujo" performance persona, I transform my pain into a ritual at the barrio corner where magic and revolution converge! I address the current unrest in the “US of AMNESIA” at the crossroads of the first anniversary of the "insurrection"--when white terrorists stormed the Capitol. I pepper my performance with sardonic humor in front of my large canvas painting about Latin American immigrants dying in ICE detention. Also, I address the brutal disappearance of our Latin American community in the 2018 Tri-centennial anthology published by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, a state arts agency, that made us invisible in their celebrated publication—as if we did not exist and contribute to the post-Katrina reconstruction. Using a repeated chant that notes “I’m on my way”, I juxtapose a spoken word poem that addresses the many traumas in a country that seduces its people to forget.
