Synopsis

My Friend Named Isolation is an experimental short film created by Angela Lopez. It follows 9-year-old Tanya who has been isolating herself from society. As a result of loneliness, she spends her days curating imaginary friends in her mind to keep her company during a time where she feels the most alone. There are two key symbols used throughout the film. Shadows bounce around the walls to symbolise comfort and friendship, merging real life with the creative imaginations in her mind. Roses are also repeated symbol, altering from bunches to singular roses, as her mind moves from feeling lonely to being comforted.

Inspired by Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2016 film The Neon Demon, the short film is dripped in neon colours to create a vivid and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. Flashes of red represent warmth that Tanya feels from her imaginary friends’ presence, blue reflects the memories of Tanya’s childhood that she reminisces on and green encapsulates the inevitable and dreadful silence that ensues in one’s mind during quarantine.
