Lebanon is a country that continues to pay the price of the civil war and sectarian tensions. Tensions between Christians, Shias, Sunnis, Druze, Maronites, and other groups, fueled by political competition and lack of trust in one another, continue to foster sectarianism within the country. As Lebanon’s second city, Tripoli is severely underdeveloped. Available UN statistics show that 85% of its population live in deprivation, one-third of which in extreme poverty. In recent years, Tripoli has witnessed a resurgence of inter-sectarian tensions. Neighborhoods are divided among sectarian and political groupings, and the worsening tensions have made these fault lines between neighborhoods more difficult to cross. The Bab el Tebbenh- Jabal Mohsen conflict, between Sunni Muslim residents of the Bab-al-Tibbaneh and Alawite Muslim residents of the Jabal Mohsen neighborhoods, particularly stand out in terms of recurring conflicts and armed clashes . Residents of the two neighborhoods have been rivals since the Lebanese Civil War, and have often engaged in violence. They are divided along sectarian lines, as well as by their opposition or support of the Alawite-led Syrian government. This situation was further exacerbated by the crisis in Syria as of 2011, when warring factions in that country found these two neighborhoods, separated by a street ironically called Syria Street, a fertile ground for extremist recruitment, successfully targeting the young, poor and unemployed (unemployment rate is at 70%).
The situation has relatively stabilized in the past year, as the armed clashes were forcefully stopped at the beginning of 2015, when the warring factions agreed to implement a Government sponsored cease-fire.
Shortly after the guns were silenced in Tripoli in February 2015, March grouped young men and women from the opposite sides of the front line to create and prepare for a comedy play inspired by their lives. For the first time in recent history, young adults from Jabal Mohsen and Bab El Tebbeneh who participated in street violence, have come together to create a play that highlights their newfound friendships risen from the ashes of years of fear and intolerance towards each other.
From the first day of castings, till the final day of performances and everything in between, MARCH was also behind the camera filming the whole story and turned it into a documentary of this experience.
Delve into the backstage of the story and discover how these once war enemies became friends and turned over a new leaf on their old lives of hatred and violence, in a journey that introduced them to us but also to their own selves.
Where did they come from? Why did they fight? How did they open up to each other and reconcile?
The full story of young Lebanese who decided to take control of their lives, challenging their past to create a new present and pave the way to a better future.
