Discuss your interest within the area of systems of innovation (or making large scale change).

This climate crisis that we are facing requires us to find fresh perspectives. So when I think of systems innovation, I think of creative problem-solving. The creative problem-solving process, by definition, is a process that helps redefine the problems and opportunities we face, come up with new, innovative responses, and then take action.

I’ve dedicated a big chunk of my life to a creative-solving problem program called Odyssey of the Mind. It’s an international competition where team members work together at length to solve a predefined long-term problem. By incorporating creativity, the process becomes fun, engaging, and collaborative. And not only does it help create better solutions, but it also helps speed the adoption of new ideas. So I guess you could say that I've been interested in systems change since age 10.

What knowledge will you bring to your Journey group?

You might have seen a meme floating around recently that says: “Climate Change needs to hire Corona virus’ publicist.” I think this is very telling of the importance that marketing and communication plays in shaping people’s perspectives and it’s a piece of the puzzel that cannot be ignore when it comes to educating people and changing behaviors. This is my wheelhouse. I have a master’s degree in global communications with a focus on social impact and I’ve been practising advertising, PR and digital marketing for the past 5 years.

I would have to guess that there aren’t a lot of Americans participating in the journey program, so I think I could bring valuable insight and a diverse outlook as someone who doesn’t hail from the EU.

How could you contribute to the EIT Climate-KIC community?

In fact, for the past six months or so, I’ve been contributing to the Climate-KIC community as a freelance writer.

I’ve been fortunate enough to work on both the Young Innovators and Climathon programmes--which has allowed me too first, understand the necessity for Climate-KIC and second, experience the tangible impact it has on young people, in particular.

Because of this freelance work I have a very good grasp of Climate-KIC’s objectives, its mission, and systems change, in general, so I feel primed for the Journey program. And I’m really hoping to contribute all that I can.

Thank you.
