Continuing to explore the spatial relationship between the virtual and actual space, I orchestrated the narrative that digitality creates an illusion of infinite space out of confinement.
This animation starts with the scene of my room - the only “actual” space in this short animation. Elements from my room - my bed, stuffed otter and computer have been digitized into photogrammetry to recreate what my room looks like in reality. However, additional elements have been composed into the scene in Cinema 4D to reinforce the narrative of this animation. As I have mentioned in my previous project, digitality enables us to be anywhere we like in the virtual world, however, the reality is this virtual space comes at a cost of restricting us physically in our rooms in front of digital devices.
The idea of the mirror-like objects has been used to represent the illusion of the expanded space created by digitality as they reflect the space into infinity. Inside of these mirrored objects in the room exists the fun virtual playgrounds that digitality creates, which the camera then zooms into to see. In these spaces, anything can happen. Even my stuffed animal can enjoy a swim in a pool. It intends to demonstrate that digitality has provided us with the infinite amount of not only spaces but also possibilities. In each scene, the camera zooms into a new space which emphasizes on the infinite amount of spaces in virtuality. Eventually, the camera zooms into the scene we started with - my room. This is to show that even though we’ve travelled through all those virtual spaces, at the end we are still confined inside this physical space. The floating “0”s and “1”s in the scenes are intended to reinforce that these spaces are merely illusions created by digitality.
