Thanks to the generosity of Black & Veatch professionals, 42 homes were rehabilitated during the annual Christmas in October event last month. More than 850 Black & Veatch professionals, along with friends and family, spent Saturday, 11 October, improving the lives of needy families in the Kansas City area. Take a moment to view this video and see how they made an impact in the community.

Steve Edwards: I'm having a lot of fun, there are a lot of great people out, a lot of Black & Veatch professionals and their families are here giving us a hand working on this house for Essie.

I think there are 40-something houses this year that Black & Veatch is working on so we're all out here trying to do something that makes you personally feel good, and we're helping people out in the city that we live and work in so it's really important we do it. And we're having fun on top of that!

Aaron Attebery: The homeowner is Miss Essie Parker and over the last three or four weeks I've really got to know her really well. She kind of almost becomes your grandma in this situation. It's great being able to come out here and help her. Her parents lived in this house 30 years ago and she's got the house now and it's kind of just falling apart but we're really glad we can come out and get to know her.

The repairs that we're doing - we're giving her a whole new screened in front porch. She loves to sit out on her front porch but she had some rough screens and a lot of bugs get in. And building her a ramp out back and a ton of plumbing issues that she had - we came out and fixed those a couple weeks ago.

Essie Parker: It saves a lot of money that I don't have anyway because I'm basically on a fixed income at this point. My husband is in a nursing home and he has Parkinson's disease, so it's just me.

Ian O'Leary: The biggest misconception about Christmas in October is that you need some set of skilled labor, and there's so much here that people are able to do that impacts this homeowner that don't require heavy skills.

Ashley Davis: I am in no way a carpenter or a house fixer or anything like that. Mainly what I've been doing today is landscaping, so that's a pretty easy job for someone like me. But other than that all the handymen are doing all the carpentry and making doors and everything like that, but the little stuff helps too.

Essie Parker: It's just a great day, it's a blessing for all the work and people are a blessing. Thank you Black & Veatch and Christmas in October!

Steve Edwards: Come on out next year and give us a hand. It's a lot of fun!
