Can You Save Fred? Mrs. McGuire's class participated in a cooperative STEM activity that has students working in small groups to save a hapless worm named Fred. Fred has managed to capsize his boat and lose his life preserver. Working together, students must rescue Fred, turn his boat right side up, and put him in his life preserver. The challenge is the students must follow certain rules: 1)They can only use the tools they have been given - 4 paper clips. 2)They may not touch Fred, the boat, or the life preserver directly with their hands. 3) They can not let Fred fall into the lake or he will drown 4) Students may not injure Fred with the paper clips.

After learning all about the scientific method the students used this activity to apply their knowledge. They had to state the purpose of the activity, hypothesize how to save Fred, figure out what steps they would use, conduct the experiment, and record their data. This fun cooperative activity built teamwork, cooperation, communication, and listening skills!
