Ali Santana is an abstract storyteller, using the tension of live performance to deliver a uniquely textured mix of prepared footage and improvisational editing. His onstage multimedia world combines a montage of found sounds and original beats, collaged with video loops, field recordings and sound samples from original films and personal archives. The thrill of Santana’s stage work is that -- unlike a linear film, DJ set, or beat show -- elements and effects are remixed, layered and played back
A Native Brooklynite, Santana utilizes an eclectic collection of urban street sounds, classic Black comedy and cinema, and old school hip hop to punctuate his distinct vignettes, touching on a range of interconnected themes including Black American culture, urban colonization, and West African dance and ritual. It seems the pounding of drums can always be faintly detected in these works, indicating a tightly gripped tension; a Black rage alchemized by the steadiness of Santana, a modern griot, at the controls.
Boom Bap Cinema is something new. In this world, the mundane takes on a glitchy and faintly threatening magic. Realms of perception intersect, and we are transported to a country where the words for dance and for war are the same. In one piece, the chiseled faces and limbs of Black men thrust aggressively and gracefully against the harsh white of an overexposed landscape, while cranes topple and concrete tenements explode mercilessly, over and over — a PTSD fever dream of urban warfare; gentrification and state violence the invisible but destructive enemy. In another, two young women ostensibly instructing a Youtube audience on how to wine and twerk become serpentine goddesses in Santana’s world, their undulating rhythms hypnotically rhythmic.
Santana's Boom Bap Cinema unfurls a visual and audio landscape broad in emotional scope and cinematic texture, but insistently Black — in ethnicity, in origin, in hue, and in mood. The common motif throughout is a meditatively layered blend of new age digital techniques and ancient analog vibes.
