Jimmy jaws about zoetropes. The basic drum-like form of the zoetrope was created in the first half of the nineteenth century by British mathematician William George Horner. A pre-cinema animation device, the zoetrope produces the illusion of motion by displaying sequenced drawings through a series of vertical slits cut in the drum. Zoetrope is a word composed from the Greek root words ‘zoe’ — meaning life,
and ‘tropos’ — meaning turning (wheel of life).
