Fear always has been a mobilizing social force; this is particularly evident nowadays. Every day we are bombarded with news and reports that trigger feelings of insecurity in us. In every newspaper, in every social network and coffee conversation. These “news” are not always based on true facts. An open information war is waged more and more clearly, where everyone claims the "truth" for himself. These feelings of insecurity have a strong influence on our behaviour, unfortunately also on our social values.

With clearly recognizable dangers and usually a pedagogically valuable solution, folk tales have always supported social cohesion. Today, fear and fantasy induced by "new tales" or "fake news" are used to gain social influence through division and polarization. Fear spreads like a virus.
Feelings of anxiety raise reactions in us that have to be taken seriously. Escape, panic, anger, aggression, stagnation and paralyzing. But it is also a mobilizing emotion. People who are afraid of an imminent danger are sometimes capable of accomplishments that are not possible under normal circumstances.

But how subjective is our perception of situations that present themselves as threatening? Are we able to objectively confront our fears with facts and thus relativize dangers? Can we put social values and morals before our feelings of fear?

Do we allow the "game" with fear to influence our behaviour and thereby transform ourselves into the "Big Bad Wolf"?
