Storyline: Searching for a serial killer responsible for the murders of six young women in Los Angeles County and counting, the anxious, socially awkward yet brilliant young detective Mikhail “Misha” Dimitrov (Dy.lan .O’b.rien) is determined to make his mark in the department by cracking the case. Sometimes acting cocky to compensate for his inexperience, he initially rubs his fellow officers the wrong way; however, his theories and revelations prove to be key in identifying important elements of their case, leading to respect from the unit. As the media and the populace grows increasingly restless and fearful, demanding answers, Misha throws himself into the case, letting it consume him. In his mind, he nicknames the perpetrator the Matryoshka Killer, as each layer of the murderer’s M.O. seems to lead to yet another one, reminding Misha of the nesting dolls that his Russian immigrant mother collected. Misha begins to stop eating and sleeping, relying on coffee and stimulants to stay awake at all times to devote himself to the case, becoming obsessed with the identity of this madman and unmasking him to bring him to justice. Though his coworkers express concern for him, Misha can’t be deterred. In the deep darkness of his manic insomnia, he comes to the chilling realization that the murders might be connected to his own past. In Misha’s final year at university, a young archaeology student named Krissie Sawyer suddenly disappeared without a trace, leaving behind a lucrative internship and a loving relationship with her college sweetheart. Trying to solve the mystery of the case with his fellow newly-minted detective and partner/friend James Siddiqui (Ram.i .Ma.lek) and grizzled homicide veteran Malcolm Chapel (Den.zel. [email protected]), Misha slowly starts to lose himself and his mind in the events of the unknown, dissociating from reality and losing a grasp on what’s real or not. Even worse? Not knowing who the killer might be and when he’ll strike again, all while his partner James unearths the cold case of Krissie Sawyer’s disappearance and begins to have a nagging feeling that his unassuming, friendly partner Misha could have had a hand in the murders. While the LAPD is in a rush to find anyone to pin as a suspect as Los Angelenos begin to grow agitated and angry with the lack of answers, James takes it upon himself to investigate Misha on his own time. Misha is desperate to prove that he’s not the killer, but begins questioning his own memories and doubting his own experiences as he falls even further down the rabbit hole of the Southland Slasher.
