I decided to test out an expensive cinema lens vs a inexpensive cinema lens in 5.7K RAW on my EVA1. The results are interesting to say the least. It's just one shot though so don't get too excited. I might try and do more later. I think a more telling test would be with a person, as plants can be more forgiving.
Filmconvert was used to grade the footage and overall I really enjoy using Filmconvert but I might've pushed the grade a little too hard with this one. I was hoping to bring out the colors in the plant and I think I went a little nuts.
Also, this isn't the most scientific test -- by any stretch -- and I didn't have a Rokinon 28mm (does that even exist?), so I used my Rokinon 35mm up against the 28mm of the Tokina. The 35mm has the advantage out the gate being a more interesting focal length.
I also wanted to see how each lens performed wide open. In this case, the Tokina at T3, and the Rokinons at T2.2 and T1.5 respectively.
So yeah. Just a very basic test. I hope this was helpful. I know I haven't been able to find ANYTHING on this Tokina lens (outside of a couple videos) and I definitely haven't seen any kind of comparison like this with these two lenses. And since the Rokinon's are a budget friendly cinema lens and the Tokina is a sort of an entry level high-end cinema lens, I figured they were a good pair to test.
So what did you think? Could you see a huge difference? Did you like one more than the other?
And finally, I understand the advantages of one over the other. There is no question that the Tokina demolishes the Rokinon Cine DS series in overall build quality and functionality. It's not even a question. But does it out shine in image quality? I think the results are closer than you'd imagine.
Cheers
