Completed as an advanced student work in Spring 2019, this film is at once a culmination of the beginning steps of a cinema education, and an instinctive ‘stepping off the deep end.“ In effect it is the instigation of whole new sets of obsessions. It is a theatrically set adaption of the opening chapter of Mikhail Bulgakov’s banned absurdist masterpiece The Master and Margarita. In this opening number, the poet Homeless (Mason Strazzella) and the editor Berlioz (Dan Deneen) encounter a strange foreigner, Woland himself (RJ Crowley), who questions their notions of spirituality and the fate of humanity in the face of Stalin-era bureaucracy. Delivered in triptych and featuring an entirely original score composed and recorded by Ethan WL and performed by an ensemble of friends, The Seventh Proof is a beginning more than it is an end, as perhaps there is no end…
