I had found the scenes in The Wedding Banquet where Wai-Tung listened to his mother’s voicemails while working out at the gym quite strange. It seemed like Ang Lee was trying to demonstrate Wai-Tung’s masculinity and how well he fit the stereotype of an attractive, heteronormative male. These scenes built up a certain persona which may have contradicted what we later learn about the main character. I wanted to take a similar approach in my movie, except, flip the social norms to have a woman (me) working out in the gym, as I did not feel that the same assumptions would hold. Sure it makes sense that a woman who spends all her time in sweatpants and at the gym is single. I also stand by the choice to have the character (me) remain single at the end of the short-film. I had a feeling the viewer might assume the main character finds love by the end…and refusing that lead to the title, “The Set-Up”.
