„The Promethean Gap“ is part of an ongoing audiovisual research project on the term „catastrophe modeling“ and its various readings. Juxtaposing images and voices compiled from a broad range of sources, including archival materials and recordings taken on site in Japan, it draws a connection between two instances of risk conception and their respective locations:
1. The safety culture concomitant with the gradual establishment of nuclear power technology in post-war Japan that would not suffice to prevent, but rather facilitate, the accident at the Fukushima power plant.
2. The development of Tokyo Disneyland as a realm of controlled virtual adventure and an intense accumulation of financial risk.

„The Promethean Gap“ is a term borrowed from 20th Century philosopher and activist Günther Anders, who would thereby offer an updated reading of the ancient Greek myth. According to the myth, Prometheus stole fire from the gods at Mount Olympus and gave it to the humans. In Western thinking, Prometheus has come to represent the ideal of a confident humanity becoming autonomous through self-enlightenment and the domination of nature. The domestication of fire, synonymous with the birth of technology, developed to become a means of defying, virtually inverting nature.
According to Anders, humanity’s domination of nature through technology would turn against itself. Not because technology fails, but because it becomes prolific beyond measure. The products exceed their producers. This discrepancy is what he called „The Promethean Gap“.
