The Pleasure Ground, Cloaca Projects, San Francisco, CA, 2019

The Pleasure Ground contains two video installations I conceived while on a self-created residency in my hometown (Lancaster, Pennsylvania).

In Turn Bridge, a camcorder is positioned through a scale model of a covered bridge (a wooden truss style bridge that populates Lancaster) affixed to a turntable. Also called ‘kissing bridges’, the enclosure makes a private viewpoint through which video of a rolling landscape composited from photographic cutouts of Lancaster’s idyllic landscape is fed to a projector.

I visited the remaining bridges around Lancaster County and created a series of diptychs by photographic through the openings on either end.

In Crop Circles, a two channel video piece, I rotate a wooden axle that extends out from a mounted camera and which, opposite that, supports a mirror reflecting my sister, a vocalist and music educator, while she performs a regional Shaker hymn in two keys.

This project directly references the mutual implication of the view and viewer on the level of form created by Richard Serra’s in his film, Railroad Turnbridge (1976). I borrowed the spinning bridge-cum-camera-viewfinder as a form through which to reframe the agricultural landscape I’d originally depicted through painting. The idea for the video works came after a visit home the previous summer where I made plein air paintings much in the way I had been trained to make by my high school art teacher.
