The Moth is a project as I continue to learn more about film making.

Why:

I thought of creating an introspective work based on footage from unassociated film I have shot; the only association being the concept for which I use them in post.

The concept:

The concept of The Moth was to draw comparisons between the relatively simple life of a moth to that of human existence. I wanted to show how moths gather around light we humans also naturally gather around physical objects, places, things, and also follow human social concepts like a moth to the light.

Central Station in Sydney, everyday thousands of people use the station. It is a meeting place, a functional station, and a grand example of Australian architecture. It is a beacon to those seeking the train home after a long day at work, or as equally to those seeking to meet with friends and family before moving throughout the city.

The light through the wall aims to highlight more of a social take on society.
Someone staring through a hole in a wall symbolises the inherit nature in humans to observe others and their lives. The light and dark represents perception. The person is observing from a dark place wanting to see the light, being enticed and drawn to the lights and glow of someone else’s life.

The clock with the time lapses sky represents ongoing time. The wheel keeps rolling. It drives our human world and is utilised as a tool for productivity. It is something we as humans are drawn to naturally as it makes our lives easier to manage.

The backyard shed. The light among the dark highlights our human fear of the unknown. The wolf howling is intended to highlight this fear by making the viewer feel uneasy by suggesting there is something there. This is a mirror to that of uses in reality of examples where hearsay is used to create fear of the unknown.
The distorted lens effect increasing as the viewer gets closer to ‘the known’ is intended to show how unknown, the known can be. It is unexpected and along with the wolf howling creates a further sense of unease. Like the moth, we are attracted by the light of the known.

The lamp. This was a more literal approach at creating the link to the moth.
The closer by closer shots and slow zooms towards both lamp and the observer highlights obsession taking over the mind. Blinded by the light, the obsession comes to the fore until it finally takes hold. The light enticing the moth.

Every viewer is intended to have their own views and the introspective nature of it allows this.
