I cannot remember if I have already shared this scene on the channel before in its completion but I am really keen to get feedback on it, because in all honesty, I'm seriously considering deleting it.

My intention for this was to still include Sauron's banishment from Dol Guldur in the film, but finding a tonally consistent place for it was very troublesome. The attack itself happens prior or during the time where Bilbo escapes in barrels with the Company from the Woodland Realm. Early edits of the project included the Attack on Dol Guldur at that point but it really didn't fit the film. As Tolkien writes himself in The Hobbit novel '...but that does not come into this tale.' However, a long time ago now, JXEditor suggested that I move the scene to function more as a flashback, similar to how Gandaf recounts his imprisonment in Orthanc to Frodo in Fellowship of the Ring. I think if it's going to be in the film, this is the best place for it. I also wanted to make it as lore faithful as possible by having Saruman be the one to banish Sauron.

However, part of me feels that this scene is just a bit too jarring still. The main thrust of the narrative is that Gandalf has arrived and is warning Thranduil that war is coming and that he must prepare. The flashback here, whilst being a nice bit of Tolkien lore, might not amount to all that much and just reaffirms to us what we already know. I included this more to tie up the Necromancer character in the film, as he is shown during his conversation with Bolg in Dol Guldur.

With further developments to the edit though, I think the Necromancer's fate can still be inferred. We have the new dialogue at the White Council saying that 'We must dispose of the Enemy'. We also have Gandalf leaving at the edges of Mirkwood at the sight of the Eye of Sauron. He then returns saying that Dol Guldur has been emptied and that the Enemy seeks control of the Mountain. And now at the end of the film, we have Lindir and Elrond's conversation saying that now that the Necromancer has been driven out, the forest will grow more wholesome. And finally we have Galadriel saying that 'the spirit of Sauron endured' and that 'he will flee into the East'.

I'm very torn, as I'm proud of what I did with this edit, but I feel like it does momentarily derail the film. However, let me know what you all think of it and if it should stay or go!
