Film by Isaac Maddock-James

A revealing look at the UK prison system and the growing movement towards Prison Abolition in the light of the Black Lives Matter movement and the Covid-19 pandemic. Featuring narration by David Morrissey.

“What does justice mean to you?”. On the 29th of November 2019, on London Bridge, Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones were tragically murdered by former prisoner Usman Khan, who had been released on licence just a year earlier. The attack caused much debate in UK. Some argued that Khan had been released too early after serving terrorist charges. Others argued that it was the UK prison system itself that was to blame, in its failure to rehabilitate Khan. This film analyses the latter argument, and questions whether the UK prison system needs to be reformed, or abolished entirely. The film also tackles the issues of race in the prison system, the injustices of Joint Enterprise, and how the outbreak of Covid-19 has been particularly harmful to those who are incarcerated.

The film features interviews from four figures each effected by the UK prison system: former prisoner - Carl Cattermole (Author - Prison a Survival Guide), former prison guard Mark Hart, BLM campaigner and academic Dr Adam Elliott-Cooper and JENGBA co-founder Gloria Morrison. The film also features a closing narration from actor David Morrissey who delivers a powerful reading of David Merritt’s (father of Jack Merritt) Guardian article.
