2019 Assignment for Motion Design at OCADu, professor Michelle Astrug.

The assignment prompt was to explore the 'ABCs' of x subject. Turning it a bit on its head, I chose to explore the ABCs of the band Deaths Dynamic Shroud.wmv, but pulling the first character from a number of their songs and forming a sort of composite poem from them.

Combining Korean Hangul and Choson-jo characters from their songs, a word poem forms that can begin to differ in meaning depending on the combination of characters. Rudimentary translation can yield meanings like:

You
This city of mine
That spirit
Nothing
Lost God

or

You
This City
The soul
No Loss
God

Combined together through a computational translation simplifies the phrase further as "You are my God"

Creating variable meaning from the relative randomness of each character at the beginning of a song title mimics the process of the design itself. The public domain found footage is not original in itself, nor is its original use fully understood, but its arrangement creates a novel meaning. 3D graphic rendering, a process which itself is heavily machine and mathematics oriented, is largely created by predetermined quantities like extruded character shapes and physics effectors, but their manipulation is considered original work. In the organization of characters into a poem through the use of translation algorithms, their meaning too isn't fully understood, but the outcome is similarly novel.

This disjointed, borrowed and twisted, remixed and ran back through distortion mimics the aesthetic of vaporwave music, as well as the cognitive space the genre presents as a mash of up cultural memory, corporate grief, and cultural outward gazing.
