Synopsis:
partitions is a short observational documentary that draws on photographs, state documents, audio recordings and footage of domestic spaces and routines, to tell a story of Sindhi migration following the Partition of India in 1947. Inspired by the life of a woman who was born in Hyderabad, Sindh, grew up in Madras (Chennai) and lived the rest of her life as a Singaporean, the film juxtaposes fragmented recollections of the past with enduring practices of the present.

Director Bio:
Vishal's first documentary short "Between Pudukkottai & Singapore (2017)" premiered at the Singapore Writers Festival, and was an award winner at the inaugural Citizen Cinema programme organised by Freedom Film Festival, Singapore. It went on to screen at various other festivals in Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America. His second short film, "partitions (2021)", tells a story of Sindhi migration to Singapore following the Partition of India in 1947, juxtaposing fragmented recollections of the past with enduring practices of the present. He has been part of the organising committee of migrant poetry events in Singapore since 2014, and he curated the short film programme as part of Global Migrant Festival in 2018. He has a background in political science, and is also a senior commissioning editor for research book publications in politics, and the social sciences.
