What if your stationery could communicate with you?
Would it feel joy? Pain? Happy, or blue?
A pen a year, or a pen a day?
A rubber worn thin, or a rubber thrown away?

Does a used tool bear no further use? How would an inanimate object feel, being rendered useless by something as vain as human emotion? Alternatively, how empowered would it feel, being viewed in the light of human emotion?
A lone pencil aids a keen student in her endeavours to learn efficiently. The pencil being put to use is a source of great joy for it, being able to live out and fulfil its existence’s purpose: to write.
Though, how would it feel in a different environment? In what way would our human emotions present themselves in the life of a pencil?
This experimental film short film explores the notion of premature abandonment and disposal, using the scenario of a pencil’s lifetime, from excessive use and nurture, to redundancy.
‘Stationery’ presents an object such as a pencil and viewing it in a human light, as if it could feel as we do, allows the audience a glimpse into the ‘psyche’ of an object.
This was heavily inspired by Zhang + Knight’s ‘love, death, distraction’, where the emotions of a broken aeroplane are explored through music and visuals. The audience experience’s the plane’s pain and inability to fulfil its sole purpose: flying. Similarly, ‘Stationery’ visits this very concept, however replacing the broken plane with a pencil.
I have employed the use of ‘exquisite corpse’, by giving 5 people one-word prompts, and having them describe the picture they associate with said words, for example ‘Joy’. These responses were the basis for the voice-over that occurs throughout ‘Stationery’.
