Petra is a solo dance piece on Rainer Werner Fassbinder´s Die bitteren Tränen der Petra von Kant (1973). The film is a triangle melodrama about a successful fashion designer tragic love affair with her younger model and protégé, Karin. It deals with the narrative of the figure of Petra von Kant: a peculiar and complex figure from Fassbinder Universe, with poses and gestures from Hollywood stars, Greek Nymphs and Fashion Models. “Deine Figur ist dein Kapital” she advices Karin. But why does one maintain one´s figure, the figura – as plastic, dynamic and living form – and what kind of labour does it involve to refrain from falling? Challenging how feminine stereotypes are presented in cinema and art, the piece investigates the performativity in everyday rituals, crisis and spectacles.
