From wind-carrier embers to combustion and decay, we watched our land catch fire.

Oscillations and distortions envelop a suspended moment, a warped haze of heat blurring the borderlines of reality. These undulations suggest a landscape born of trauma - burning, decaying and regenerating.

Smoulder embodies a shifting environment through three connected yet disparate modes of improvised performance: sound, animation and movement. It is a multi-dimensional response to the 2019 Australian bushfires. Smoulder floods the space with the intense, suppressed emotions that saturate the aftermath of fire and calls for resilience, protection and kinship.

This film was dreamt and created on the sacred unceded lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora nation. We acknowledge and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We also celebrate and acknowledge that the people of this land maintain a sacred tradition of sharing knowledge through voice, music and movement that has been practiced for generations. We are grateful for the privilege to have collaborated with diverse voices with the inclusion of Indigenous peoples.
