Hello! I'm Shreenidhi, an 18-year-old CFO, writer and filmmaker from Chennai. This is the video for my Girls20 application, and it's about what matters the most to me.
Apologies for the quality; I have a throat infection which kind of makes pronunciation very tough, and I shot this out of my dorm room, with no fancy equipment. Here's the transcript: (Note: At one point, it seems as though I'm saying "have been offered..." but I'd like to clarify that it is "haven't, and would like to apologize for bad enunciation.)
What matters to me the most is the inclusion of women and minorities in Indian cinema, a field I’m eager to enter myself, because we matter, and recognizing our stories and lives on screen makes us feel powerful, recognized. We haven’t been offered meaningful, impactful positions on all sides present- be it the creative, technical, or business ones. We don’t have positions of power and responsibility where we get to create and control universes of our own, as we restricted socially because of our gender, caste, class, religion, and sexuality, essentially being relegated to smaller, less powerful positions because we don’t fit the norm. Only the voices of the privileged reach the screen, which is obvious in how the lesser and underprivileged are represented on it, and treated off it, without the dignity and respect we deserve. What matters to me the most is seeing strong, powerful minority characters on screen, playing a part in creating these characters, and getting to define what strong and powerful are. What matters is giving others like me these opportunities as well, and encouraging diversity in voices, themes and stories, because we deserve representation as well, and we deserve to create our own.
