The Prompt: America on Fire
-You are to direct a 3 minute (or less) dramatic short film.
-No comedies.
-It MUST be presented in high contrast Black & White.
-Your story MUST be set in present-day America.
-The subject matter is going to concern the protests occurring now and this past summer
-Your film MUST have 2 actors (no more than that).
-Your assigned peer MUST assume the role of the protagonist.
-You must introduce the protagonist in the first shot in the film -- doing a behavior that
establishes their starting psychology. And that opening shot will serve as a tracking point for the very last shot of the film (also of the protagonist which will show them in a very different state of mind -- because the story and their choices and decisions must change them at the end).
-The other actor must be the antagonist.
-There must be an INCITING INCIDENT that disturbs the protagonist's life at the 10% point of the story.
-The Conflict between your protagonist and antagonist must build to a CLIMACTIC SCENE
-In this climactic scene -- the Protagonist has to make some kind of decision that is going to alter their life in a substantial way that will have resonance with the audience.
-And in the final scene of RESOLUTION -- the audience must be able to discern the change that has occurred within the Protagonist.
-***There are other mandatory elements that must be interwoven into your story somehow:
-You MUST intercut COLOR news footage of the Protests
-You MUST do this in an artful way.
-5 TIMES in the film.
-It's up to you where in the story and how long this footage appears on screen.
-The use of the protest footage doesn't have to be directly literal.
-You don't have to suggest that the protest is happening directly outside their window
(though you could).
-You don't have to directly refer to the protests or George Floyd or Jacob Black - but your story's subtext has to engage with those issues and allow the viewer (ten years from now) to understand that your story is taking place during this national crisis.
-Your characters maybe passionate protestors or totally oblivious and unconcerned about anything but themselves.
-Lastly -- you must find an opening quote to place before your story that thematically dials in your message.
-As always follow all the COVID REGULATIONS when shooting the film.
-If any rules are broken -- we cannot show your film in class.
-Please refer to the syllabus for the exact guidelines.
-And remember that props cannot be handled by actors.
