Michelle Handelman’s phantasmagoric video installations create hypnotic and complex
spaces of ever-shifting queer identities that push against the boundaries of gender,
race, and sexuality from a feminist perspective. Coming up through the years of the
AIDS crisis and Culture Wars, Michelle has built a body of work that blurs the line
between fiction and reality, investigating philosophical questions of existence about the
things we collectively fear and deny: sex, death, and chaos. Her work often
recontextualizes icons of cinema and literature by casting contemporary counter-culture
figures who play versions of themselves within a multi-layered fictional framework.
During the 1990s, Michelle was based in San Francisco, where she collaborated with
Monte Cazazza, a pioneer of the Industrial music scene, directed the feature
doc BloodSisters (1996), and performed in several films by Lynn Hershman-Leeson.
She is an Associate Professor in the Film, Media and Performing Arts department at the
