Congressman John Lewis, who passed away last week, surely kept his promise to help make of this country a more perfect union.
He was among the many Civil Rights fighters who made the almost unimaginable possible.
As President-elect Barack Obama recalled on his inauguration in 2008: “I hugged him on the inauguration stand before I was sworn in and told him I was only there because of the sacrifices he made.”
Those sacrifices extended to people from all walks of life as well, including me, from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
As a member of Congress, he was among the the drum majors who fought for better public education, health care and job opportunities and more. He was a giant and the fact that he lived in my lifetime is a blessing. -- Natalia Muñoz
