Re:Bodying is a stop motion animation about the messy nuances of identity. The main goal with my film was to create a space where identity is free to mutate and evolve. I wanted to transport my puppets to a realm where they are free to change and are not tied to the pressures of a static, and rigid sense of self. I collected foley sounds from my real environment to create distorted reverberations for the film’s score. Born out of a dance-like performance where their movements endow a sort of harmonious disharmony, my puppets fall and tangle into one another. They mimic each other, push and pull on each other, and even embrace one another. I wanted them to become the other, and make it unclear where one self begins and the other ends. They all mutate into one bodily mass. I feel like the treatment they have for one another is at times uneasy and other times tender. I intend for them to be read as the same but struggling through their differences. I aimed for the plants and puppets to move in homogeny to promote a feeling of connection across different bodies (human and non-human). Inspired by Haraway, Deleuze and Guttari, I wanted to expand on the idea of ‘self’ and what it means to find your identity when you live in a changing body.
