Purgator/E is a short experimental film blurring the line between the normal and the abnormal, exploring the way in which one’s perception of an object or figure is affected by its presentation. The combination of the ordinary with the surreal seeks to blur the line between the two, hence the title, a play on the word ‘Purgatory’ – the theological place between life and death, between the known and the unknown. Purgator/E makes the viewer question that which they are deeply familiar with – the grass in the yard, the human hand, television, the human face, mirrors, closets, doors to the outside world - by erratically contrasting it with unpredictable and unfamiliar presentations, both visual and aural. The imagery of the film is meant to subtly unsettle and provoke discomfort through the juxtaposition of the everyday with surreal imagery and dynamic editing. Frenetic visuals are accompanied by an abrasive soundscape constructed from the soundtrack of the everyday – coffee machines, the human voice, guitars, and spoons augment Purgator/E’s discomforting atmosphere. Where it lacks narrative cohesion, the film possesses a surrealist and expressionist tonal consistency to create an intense, unsettling, surprising and engaging viewing experience.
