First performed by Negro & The Orchans in the 1964 British musical The Roar Of The Greasepaint, The Smell Of The Crowd (Theatre Royal, Nottingham) with Cy Grant as The Negro and a young Elaine Paige as one of the Urchins. Their version was not recorded, but Grant sang it on his album Cy & I (World Record Club T451), probably predating Nina Simone's more famous cut.
