This little 8mm film was by my father, Edward H. Roberts, during his trip to Europe in 1962. He happened to take a train to Vatican City four days before the enactment of Vatican II... a controversial 16 page document that dramatically changed the way the Catholic church approached its relationship with the rest of the world. This was less than a year before Pope John XXIII died. His health was failing, and films of him at this time are very rare. To this day he is still known to Italian Catholics as "Il Papa Buono" - The Good Pope.

Visible in the movie are two members of the Swiss Guard in their colorful uniforms, as well as various clergy, photographers, the adoring crowd, and two glimpses of the Pope in his window above the red banner.
