PermaPak is a marine and waste-stream biopolymer solution to single-use plastics, that does not extract land resources. Designed with a regenerative life cycle, this novel material foregrounds biodegradability and the circularity of permaculture ecology.

Mycelial chitosan recovered from citric acid production meets discarded silk cocoon protein and red algae extract, to achieve a carbon-negative foodgrade packaging product of superior tensile strength, antimicrobial property, and ecological appeal.

Most plastic waste does not have a reusable life cycle and ends up as permanent environmental damage in landfills or as microplastics. Plastic films and polyethylene bags are responsible for the lion’s share of this pollution—46% of ocean plastics—nonrecyclable leakage which escapes landfills. A biologically degradable solution with scalable ecology demands the urgency of our attention. Customers desire an empowered experience to choose a flexible biopolymer product produced independently of petrochemical, monoculture, and intensive aquaculture industries.

PermaPak offers minimally-processed material design that integrates biological degradability with regenerative soil-building practices. We created a high-strength thin film plastic replacement, purposefully utilizing waste streams that are not associated with deforestation, fertilizer runoffs, eutrophication, mining of fertilizers, ocean-dredging for aquaculture feed, waterway oxygen depletion and dead zones. At the product’s end-of-use, the breakdown of daily single-use materials fits into a vision of nutrient-cycling as enrichment. We truly believe that monopolized reliance on fossil-fueled plastics is an outmoded, breakable behavior pattern.
