This movie of a 3D simulation shows a convection zone (bottom) interacting with a stable layer (top). In the bottom part of the domain, the energy cannot be transported through the layer stably, so convective motions help transport the heat. Above the dashed horizontal line, convection is not NEEDED to transport the heat, but we see the convection extend past this point in a process called "penetrative convection." The convective motions stop at the solid horizontal line and excite gravity waves above that in the stable region. Note that upflows (orange in the left panel) that are warm (red in the right panel) turn cold (blue in the right panel) when they enter this "penetrative zone" (between the dashed and solid horizontal lines).
