“A remark that is added to a sentence, often to provide an explanation or extra information, that is separated from the main part of the sentence by commas, brackets, or dashes” [Cambridge Dictionary]

With the duet (parenthesis) I wanted to portray the feeling of being alone, but connected to another person, who is not there and the only thing you have left is the memory of the time together and the sense of her or his smell and touch. It is as living the moment again, but with the realization that you are alone in the end.
I named the piece (parenthesis), because you go from one day to the next, till it becomes years and it‘s defined by the people you met close or far and your experience together is like a subordinate clause, which helps to write your story.
The duet was originally performed in Arnhem (NL) in February 2020. It was planned to be performed again, but due to the Covid-19 outbreak we had to change our plan. So, I asked the dancers to film themselves dancing the middle part of the choreography and used their background noise together with the recorded music of the live performance as a soundtrack to create this video.
In the new process of the piece the dancers had to trust their memory of dancing together with the other person. And on how this particular situation of restriction gave them a different reality for exploring even more the concept of having the memory of the other person as the only thing to hold onto.

The video is a reworked piece of the original, adapted to the external conditions. A creation of four countries.
