In 2020, during the time of Covid-19, a man named Julien Poulson wandered into the city of Maitland and decided to make a sci-fi super 8 film called Space Junk. Julien, born in Tasmania, had lived in Cambodia for many years and was most famous for being a member of the rock project The Cambodian Space Project. What started out as a small scale project became something gargantuan, as various artists from all walks of life joined up to help with the film, including Steve Kilbey from the iconic Australian band The Church. Julien also recruited his cousin, Helen Hopcroft, artist most famous for dressing up as Marie Antoinette for a year. All in all, the film was a huge event.
But the story does not end there. Perhaps from the adrenaline that came from Space Junk, Julien proceed to tackle many other artistic projects. In the span of less than a year Julien also worked on an album, went on road trip, created paintings, shot a werewolf movie, developed a play about his road trip, among other things. All the while, Space Junk remained incomplete.
Outer Focus is a celebration of art and artists, and the tale of a man driven to an almost insatiable need to create art. It is a reflection on the attempt to keep that art world alive during the time of Covid-19.
