In 2015, the Belen Consolidated School district had one of the highest truancy rates statewide.With over 4,000 students the district leadership knew it was time to implement something new to incentivize good attendance. Leadership took a multi-level action approach - applying for grants to hire an attendance success initiative coach, educating families on the importance of students attending daily, and by reaching out to local businesses and organizations to provide student incentives for good attendance. Grade levels compete with one another, and with help from Nusenda members' Community Rewards contributions, can win movie days, ice cream parties, bicycles, backpacks, and more. To date, more than 2,600 students have received rewards for outstanding attendance.
