NASA is renaming its headquarters after Mary W. Jackson, Nasa’s first female African American engineer.
She was a mathematician and aerospace engineer who worked in the segregated West Area Computing Unit.
NASA’s administrator said in a statement that Jackson helped NASA succeed in getting American astronauts to space.
In 2019 NASA renamed the street outside their headquarters ‘Hidden Figures Way’, after the book and movie 'Hidden Figures'.
'Hidden Figures' tells the story of Mary Jackson and 2 other African American women who worked in NASA.
Mary never accepted the status quo, she helped break barriers and open opportunities for African Americans and women in the field of engineering and technology, Jim Bridenstine, NASA Administrator.
Mary Jackson retired from NASA in 1985 and died in 2005 at the age of 83.
She was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in November 2019.
Her former colleagues Christine Darden, Katherine Johnson, and Dorothy Vaughan were also awarded the medal.
Hidden no more, we will continue to recognize the contributions of women, African Americans, and people of all backgrounds who have helped construct NASA's successful history to explore, Jim Bridenstine, NASA Administrator
