The Mitchell & Kenyon film company was a pioneer of early commercial movies based in Blackburn at the start of the 20th century.
The discovery in 1994 of a hoard of film negatives led to restoration of the Mitchell & Kenyon Collection, the largest surviving collection of early documentary films in the world. This programme features a selection of their films with live piano accompaniment from Stephen Horne – including many local scenes and events .

Mitchell & Kenyon in Manchester and Salford has been carefully selected from over three hours of footage taken by the Company in Manchester and Salford between 1900 and 1905, to be shown at a cinematograph at the Manchester Wake Fairs, or as part of an act on a cine-variety show or for a stand alone film show at the St James’s Hall in the city. All types of local events were captured by the cameramen, ranging from engineering and cotton factories, visits of national celebrities and royalty, sporting events, everyday street scenes and parades and processions.
