The spectator/auditor walks into a darkened room; a low rumble is heard, while light emanates from a small, cellphone-sized aperture in the facing wall. Sitting in front of the opening, they press their head against the surface to peer inside. A room-sized projection of a mirrored lake morphs and fades; reflective side walls create the illusion of an endless horizon. Tactile sound begins vibrating throughout their body – an infrasonic/haptic mix of diegetic and spectrally processed sound disseminated via wall mounted tactile transducers accompanied by a binaural soundscape transmitted via hyper-directional speakers situated on opposite walls.

Windows upon windows – a peep show into a private, contemplative experience…an unknown observer’s reflective moment, a habitual axis.

Our capacity for contemplation somehow persists in a media-saturated world – we remain capable of spending hours staring at an ocean. Such an experience is not only visual, but multi-sensory – sonic, tactile and olfactory. With this in mind, I am interested in investigating the obverse of Hitchcock’s notion that cinema should be “life with the dull bits cut out”. What mini-narratives can be construed via a considered observation of a cellphone-shot archive of one’s life lived? Re-re-re-articulating scale, both experiential and cinematic: from large-scale wide-screen lived experience to the confined screen of a cellphone and back again. Iterations of an identical space. Rhythmanalysis – small events that define a lived space within extended time, never static but in constant objective and subjective evolution.
